Through a partnership with PPI, Tau Beta Pi members receive a 30% discount on PPI-published exam preparation materials for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam (FE) and the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam (PE), the two exams necessary to become a licensed engineer. (Discounts are not available on courses, packages, non PPI-published products, or other discounted items.)
Professional licensure provides greater career opportunities. Engineering students graduating college with the FE exam already behind them have a competitive advantage in the job market over other graduating engineering students. Once in the workforce, those with their PE license can (according to the National Association of Professional Engineers) receive salaries as much as $20,000 higher than their non-licensed counterparts. Licensing also gives you the freedom to have a portable license, open a private practice, enter into contracts, submit plans, and more.
If you are considering taking the FE or PE exam, learn more about the exam timing at the NCEES website. The FE is a computer-based exam that is administered year-round in testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers. The PE exams are offered twice a year, once in April and again in October. It is recommended that college seniors take the FE while in school because much of the content on the exam is still fresh from classes. PPI has launched a website for the most up-to-date information on the FE/EIT exam.
